Orbital Technologies Announces First Annual Cash Award to UBC Student
Vancouver, BC – October 4, 2007 – Orbital Technologies Inc. is pleased to announce today the first cash award of the Orbital Technologies Award in Computer Science at University of British Columbia (UBC) to Samantha Leung.
Samantha Leung, currently a third year UBC computer science major, is presented with the first UBC computer science award from Orbital for her outstanding academic achievement and community contributions.
“We are excited to announce Samantha as UBC’s Orbital Technologies Scholarship recipient,” said Bill Dorfmann, VP, Engineering of Orbital Technologies. “Samantha’s commitment to her studies and the community is commendable. Orbital does our best to provide stepping-stones to success for BC students and we feel that cost of education should be the least of students’ worries. We see a great future in supporting BC students, as many of our talented staff are BC educated as well.”
Orbital’s scholarship is a merit-based award intended to recognize outstanding students with strong academic performance and dedication to community. As a cash award, it can be expended on tuition, books or living expenses.
“Scholarly endowments and corporate support to BC universities play a key role in providing students with the recognition and support they need to succeed,” said Simon Peacock, Dean of the Faculty of Science at UBC. “Orbital has been a continual supporter of UBC and its computer science program. There is no doubt that the generous support gained from Orbital will help foster a legacy that will continue to grow.”
The Orbital Technologies Award is funded by a $10,000 endowment by Orbital to the University. Applicants are evaluated based on academic performance and community service with preference given to female candidates.
Orbital has established similar scholarships at Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria.
