UVic Computing Science Student Honoured with Orbital Technologies Award
Vancouver, BC – November 29, 2007 – Orbital Technologies Inc., a leading BC-based provider of software development services, announced today the second annual award of the Orbital Technologies Inc. Scholarship to Erika Zimmermann from University of Victoria.
Erika Zimmermann, currently a third year software engineering student at the University of Victoria, was presented with Orbital’s second cash award. Zimmermann was selected based on her exceptional grades and dedication to community service, such as volunteering for the CUPE Local and helping individuals from low-income families at Blessings Boutique in Grand Forks, BC.
“We congratulate Erika as this year’s UVic Scholarship recipient,” said Bill Dorfmann, VP, Engineering of Orbital Technologies Inc. “Erika is an example of an individual with demonstrated aptitude in software engineering and dedication to community. At Orbital, we believe recognition of talent and passion in Computing Science is key to fostering growth for the future. Orbital’s UVic scholarship was set up to encourage and reward exceptional students, and it is part of Orbital’s ongoing commitment to contribute to the society in which we live.”
Orbital’s scholarship is bestowed to UVic Computing Science students who have performed outstandingly during their academic curriculum and have demonstrated their commitment to helping the community. As a cash award, it can be expended on tuition, books or living expenses.
“We are very pleased to award this second annual Computing Science scholarship on behalf of Orbital Technologies,” said Michael Miller, Dean Engineering at the University of Victoria. “This scholarship is made possible by Orbital’s generous endowment to the University, and it is an excellent example of good corporate citizenship and giving back to the community in ways that help us grow and continue to succeed. We see this award as a great way to provide both encouragement and incentive for our students to realize their goals.”
The Orbital Technologies Inc. Scholarship in Computing Science is made possible by a $10,000 endowment by Orbital to the University. Applicants are selected based on their history of academic performance and community service, with preference to female candidates.
Orbital has established similar scholarships at Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia. Additional information about the Orbital Technologies Inc. Scholarship at the University of Victoria is available at the University’s Student Awards and Financial Aid Office.
